Whether it was a teasing comment or a misunderstood joke, I’d often find myself internalizing words more deeply than intended. My friends noticed this long before I did. Over time, what began as concern or confusion on their part turned into hesitation. They began tiptoeing around me, choosing their words carefully, editing their jokes, holding back their honesty. Eventually, they told me they felt like they couldn’t be fully authentic around me—like they were always walking on eggshells. It hurt to hear, but it was also a necessary truth.

At first, my instinct was to defend myself. “I can’t help how I feel,” I’d say, or, “I just care deeply—that’s not a bad thing.” And while those things were true, they weren’t the full story. Sensitivity, in itself, is not a flaw. But when that sensitivity makes others feel unsafe expressing themselves, there’s a disconnect worth examining. I started to realize that my emotional reactions, though valid, sometimes created an emotional tax for the people closest to me.

What made the situation more complex was that my friends weren’t trying to hurt me. They were trying to be honest, funny, real. But each time I took something personally, it created a ripple of discomfort. Jokes were second-guessed. Feedback was sugar-coated or withheld. Conversations became less spontaneous. The space between us grew quiet—not because of a lack of care, but because the cost of honesty had become too high.

This realization didn’t come all at once. It took patience and hard conversations—ones that I had to enter with a willingness to listen, rather than to defend. I had to acknowledge that while my feelings mattered, so did theirs. I learned to ask questions like, “What did you mean by that?” instead of assuming intent. I began practicing a pause before reacting—creating a space to reflect before responding.

I also had to work on building inner resilience. Not every comment was an attack. Not every piece of feedback was a rejection. The more I reminded myself of this, the more I could separate my self-worth from momentary discomfort. Slowly, my relationships began to shift. My friends noticed I was more open, more grounded. In return, they became more open, too. Our conversations regained their rhythm, their honesty, their humor.

It’s still a work in progress. I still feel things deeply—that’s part of who I am. But I’ve learned that emotional sensitivity and emotional intelligence aren’t the same thing. One is about how we feel; the other is about how we handle those feelings in connection with others. And it’s in that balance—between authenticity and empathy, between honesty and kindness—that real, lasting connection can grow.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve worn my heart close to the surface.
