I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about that weird, tender space you end up in when you genuinely care about someone, but you know the two of you are standing in completely different chapters of life. Not because either of you did anything wrong\u2014just because the math of your realities doesn\u2019t line up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For me, it showed up with someone I really liked. He\u2019s five years younger than me, with two young children, and a life that\u2019s still in its building phase\u2014messy, beautiful, exhausting, expensive. I\u2019m at a point where I can finally see the horizon of my own future. I\u2019m ten, maybe fifteen years away from retirement. I\u2019m thinking about what I want the rest<\/em> of my life to look like. Peace. Stability. Partnership with someone who can stand on their own two feet. Someone who doesn\u2019t need rescuing or patching or constant financial triage. Someone who\u2019s ready to build something with<\/em> me, not someone who\u2019s still trying to build themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And he\u2014well\u2026 he\u2019ll still have a child in high school when I\u2019m thinking about downsizing or buying a little place with a warm winter. He\u2019s always struggling financially. Always trying to stay afloat. I don\u2019t fault him for that\u2014life is hard, and he\u2019s doing his best. But I know myself: I don\u2019t want to spend my retirement years carrying someone else\u2019s weight. I don\u2019t want my \u201cgolden years\u201d to be spent helping someone catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So when is it time to call it quits with someone you care about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think it\u2019s when the affection is still there, but the future isn\u2019t. When you look ahead and see yourself moving toward a phase of life you\u2019ve earned, and you know that staying with this person means sacrificing that vision. When you realize the relationship asks more of you than it gives back\u2014not because they\u2019re selfish, but because their life isn\u2019t in a place where they can<\/em> give you what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s when you start shrinking your future to fit theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then the harder question: I want to say yes. I really do. But I also know myself well enough to admit that friendship isn\u2019t something you can force when your heart is still involved. Not when part of you is still wondering \u201cwhat if,\u201d or still hoping they\u2019ll magically arrive at the same place you are. It\u2019s not fair to either of you. Not fair to pretend you can slide into a platonic lane while the emotional dust is still hanging in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So my answer\u2014for now\u2014is no. Not immediately. Not while I\u2019m still untangling the version of the future I almost let myself imagine with him. Maybe someday, when the attachment has softened and I\u2019ve stepped fully back into my own life, friendship could exist. But right now, the kindest thing I can do\u2014for both of us\u2014is to let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Liking someone isn\u2019t always enough. And that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want a future that feels calm, mutual, equal, sustainable. I want to spend my later years with someone who meets me where I am\u2014not someone I constantly have to pull up to the starting line. Sometimes it just has to be a beautiful, meaningful thing that doesn\u2019t survive the practicality of real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I\u2019ll trust that the next chapter\u2014the one that actually aligns with my life\u2014will be worth the space I\u2019m making for it now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
