It\u2019s kind of like dating, but with less wine and more awkward small talk about hobbies. I\u2019ve been making a real effort to put myself out there lately\u2014joining group events, walking into rooms full of strangers, and basically coaching myself with, <em>\u201cOkay Marie, you\u2019re here to find your people, not bolt for the door.\u201d<\/em> And honestly? It takes guts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One thing I\u2019ve noticed, especially among women, is how often social anxiety sneaks in and convinces us not to go. I\u2019ve seen it happen so many times: someone RSVPs, gets dressed, maybe even drives all the way to the event\u2026 then sits in the parking lot and drives home. Or they\u2019ll walk in, scan the room, and leave before things even start. And I get it\u2014our brains can be master storytellers, spinning lines like <em>\u201cEveryone already knows each other. You\u2019re going to say something awkward. You should probably just go home and order nachos instead.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s the thing, though: showing up is usually the hardest part. Once you\u2019re there, once the event actually starts, it\u2019s almost never as scary as the pep rally of doom in your head beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And trust me, I\u2019m not saying this like I\u2019m immune to it. I\u2019ve had plenty of nights where I wanted to hide in my car or fake an emergency just to avoid walking inside. But I\u2019ve kept pushing myself through that discomfort, because I know what\u2019s on the other side: connection. Sometimes it\u2019s a new friend. Sometimes it\u2019s just a fun conversation with someone I wouldn\u2019t have met otherwise. Either way, it\u2019s always better than the regret of not even trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So here\u2019s my pep talk for anyone struggling with the pre-event panic spiral: you don\u2019t have to conquer your anxiety before you go. Bring it with you. Let it ride shotgun. Just don\u2019t let it drive the car. Because odds are, someone else in that room feels the exact same way\u2014and they\u2019ll be so glad you showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Making friends as an adult doesn\u2019t just fall into your lap. It comes from awkward hellos, brave moments, and showing up even when you\u2019d rather be home in pajamas. But when you push through? That\u2019s where the magic happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So next time you\u2019re tempted to bail, remind yourself: you don\u2019t need to be the life of the party.
